The ancient Vedic tradition gave the name Ajna Chakra (the sixth chakra) to the Third Eye. In yogic literature, it is described as a subtle center of consciousness in the region between the eyebrows.

The word ‘ajna’ means ‘command’. The practice of meditation allows it to become the command center for the being, who receives instructions from Paramashiva Himself. It is also known as the command center because, once this chakra is activated, it gives the individual the power of clairvoyance, and the ability to control and influence the forces of Nature, as well as his own lower disposition

Ancient references to the Third Eye

Patanjali speaks on this power in his Yoga Sutras:

pravr̥tty-āloka-nyāsāt
sūkṣmā-vyāvahita-viprakr̥ṣṭa-jñānam ॥ 3.25॥

By redirecting the inner vision (one achieves) the knowledge of subtle, veiled and remote (objects and events).

The ancient Yogi Sri Goraksanath of the Nath Sampradaya of Shaivism refers to the Third Eye as ‘bhruchakra’ in his work, Goraksha Vachana Sangraha (‘bhru’ meaning the eyebrows).

It is described to be the size of a thumb (angushtha maatra) and appears like a steadily burning light (deepa shikhaakaara). It represents the eye of Enlightenment (jnana netra).

daśahatāḥ diśo daśa ||

His Three Eyes are to be remembered as symbolizing the three powers – Iccha, Jnana, Kriya – the power of Will, the power of Pure Wisdom, and the power of Cosmic Action. The moon crescent denotes Sarvajnāta, His power of all- knowing.

Modern Neuroscience and the Third Eye

Based on the visible evidence of the effects of meditating on the Ajna Chakra, it is possible to postulate the neurophysiological pathways and structures involved in it.

Several studies have been done on the SPH Nithyananda Paramashivam, ranging from FMRI to PET Scan to qEEG. The studies clearly show continuous heightened activity in the infer-medial prefrontal cortex, and a simultaneous state of total restfulness with awareness across the entire brain, suggesting complete entrainment of neural activity.

Process of Third Eye Awakening

Initiation or Deeksha

This is the process of directly transmitting the bio-energy (Kundalini energy of the Avatar) into the area of the Third Eye, located between the two eyebrows of the recipient.

Meditation

The meditation consists of visualizing a light or golden light within the third eye, which directly connects with the SPH Nithyananda Paramashivam’s third eye. Timed meditation is performed alternatively, with eyes closed and eyes opened for three rounds.

Meditation using a blindfold

The application of the blindfold completely cuts off any sensory inputs in the form of photons falling into the retina of the eye. In the outer world, the maximum sensory input is through the visual system. Meditating in the darkness of the blindfold on the third eye allows one to focus with minimal distraction, while simultaneously activating the pineal gland (which produces melatonin in darkness). Melatonin is responsible for re-adjusting the circadian rhythm of the body, and has significant anti-aging benefits.
